Funding Restored for Southeast 136th Avenue Sidewalks in Portland

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales has announced that he intends to restore funding for a sidewalk project on Southeast 136th Avenue in Portland, after a young girl's death in the area. A broad array of community organizations had called passionately for the project to be restored, and last month, 1000 Friends and Oregon Walks published an op-ed in the Oregonian asking for the Mayor's support.

Additionally, 700 area residents signed an online petition calling for safer walking citywide.

1000 Friends thanks Mayor Hales and the Portland City Council, as well as members of the Legislature's East Portland Caucus, for demonstrating their commitment to safer walking for East Portlanders.

Thank you also to many of our members and supporters who joined our call to restore this project and ensure that safe transportation choices remain a priority for community leaders.

Together we can keep making streets safer for all Oregonians, no matter where they live or how they get around.
