Measure 49 passes big in Linn, Benton

November 07, 2007

Linn and Benton county voters overwhelmingly sided with the majority of Oregonians who want to redefine Oregon’s land use laws in voting in favor of Measure 49. Statewide the measure passed 572,997 to 361,555.

Measure 49 repeals Measure 37, which was approved in 2004 and granted landowners compensation from the government or property use rights back to the date of land purchase. Measure 49 restricts development to three to 10 houses in most instances.

Linn County voters reversed themselves completely, voting 18,054 in favor and 16,459 against. In 2004, the county approved Measure 37 by 33,918 to 15,926.

Benton County stayed the course, approving Measure 49 by 29,360 to 14,626. In 2004, it was the only county in the state to vote against Measure 37, 22,028 to 20,919.

Voters rejected Ballot Measure 50, which would have increased the state’s tobacco tax and designate some of the new money for health care for children. The statewide tally was 534,313 against and 363,636 in favor. Linn County voted 26,154 against and 8,465 in favor. Benton was closer, with 14,626 against and 14,153 in favor.

Nearly 60 percent of eligible Linn County voters and 65 percent of Benton County voters cast ballots.
