The LatestCounties join to cut emissions by 80%Warming - Multnomah and Clackamas first in state to sign on April 16, 2008 Multnomah and Clackamas County officials have pledged to fight global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050. Each board of commissioners passed resolutions last week codifying the effort, which will begin with an inventory of emissions generated by county operations. With the resolution, the counties became part of the Sierra Club's Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Declaration. The two counties are the first in Oregon to sign onto the initiative. County officials also pledged to work to increase local, regional and state efforts to combat global warming. They promised to urge the federal government to enact national greenhouse gas reduction policies. The counties haven't yet drafted a plan for reducing pollutants. But county officials said that, among other things, they will expand initiatives already in place, including increased use of clean energy, such as wind-powered electricity. They also plan to expand fleets of hybrid and biodiesel-powered vehicles. The Sierra Club launched the Cool Counties program last summer with 12 counties from across the United States. The signups by Multnomah and Clackamas counties bring total participation to 30 counties. This is the first time two adjoining counties have signed onto the initiative in tandem, the Sierra Club said. Multnomah and Clackamas counties have about 29 percent of the state's population. -- Gail Kinsey Hill |
