You are invited to an evening event featuring Dr. Ed Glaeser, an economist at Harvard University, who will deliver a talk called “Big Data and Big Cities.” You may be familiar with Dr. Glaeser’s book Triumph of the City in which he describes the role that cities play in spurring innovation, social mobility, and commerce. Metro is cosponsoring this event with Portland State University.

The talk will be from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 12, in Room 75 of PSU’s Lincoln Hall and will be preceded by a reception from 5:30 to 6:00 (outside Room 75). Admission is free, so please feel free to spread the word. Details can be found in the attached flier.

Big Data and Big Cities

New, “big” data sources allow measurement of city characteristics and outcome variables with higher frequencies and finer geographic scales than ever before. Widely available on-line images can be used to measure trends and changes in city neighborhoods, improve property tax assessments, and measure income in developing world cities. However, big data will not solve large urban social science questions on its own. Dr. Glaeser will discuss how communities are using data to improve land use and transportation planning, public health and other efforts.
