Dear Friend,

Spring has sprung, and it’s time to sow seeds literally and figuratively. While farmers are busily working on their crops, 1000 Friends is busily working in the legislature, where we have an urgent need for your help.

Five bills that threaten to remove land use planning from large portions of the state.
Learn more about those bills and what you can do to help stop them from moving forward.

Because we fight so hard on behalf of Oregon’s lands and people, our donors were inspired to make this month’s
McCall Gala the most successful we’ve had to date! Thank you.

March is also Women’s History Month, and we
explore the histories of three extraordinary women who were integral to shaping Oregon’s land use laws. We also recognize the Honorable Barbara K Roberts for her lifetime of service to Oregon and dedication to our land use program.

We are very proud to be supporting a bill this legislative session that promotes safe and reliable farm worker housing.
Learn more about SB 1.

Finally, our
partnership with Metro to support and enhance the Land Use Leadership Initiative (LULI) was highlighted this month, as Metro representatives sat in on a LULI training day.

Thank you for your passion,

The 1000 Friends Team

This is not an April Fool’s joke. On April 6, the Senate Committee on Environment & Natural Resources will hear five bills that each attempt to remove land use planning from parts of Oregon in one way or another. The bills allow expansions of urban growth boundaries and super-siting of businesses on farm, forest, and range lands and in natural resource and wildlife areas, regardless of whether there is even a need for more land for these uses. The Committee will hear the bills together, so Oregonians can testify on all the bills at once, or on any individual bill.

2017 McCall Gala Recap
An Inspired Evening

IMGL7582
The 2017 McCall Gala was a huge success. We are so grateful for the amazing community of 300 supporters who come together to celebrate the urban growth boundary and giving Oregonians the best of both worlds! We hope everyone had a fantastic time.

The evening was a-buzz with excitement. Governor Kate Brown graced the event for the early part of the evening, proud to speak about the value of Oregon’s conservation efforts, and to recognize her friend, predecessor, and mentor, the Honorable Barbara Roberts. Governor Brown welcomed our guests and shared some special words…

Women of Land Use
The founders and early years
Jannet McLennan_1970s
March is Women’s History Month. Women have made powerful impacts throughout history, and often their stories go untold. This is why we are taking the time to highlight a few Oregonian women who have made indelible marks on the state’s land use history and future. Today, we profile a few of those outstanding individuals in celebration of Women’s History Month. And, because we shouldn’t just leave women’s history (or any other group’s history) to one month out of the year, we will periodically provide a profile of someone in Oregon’s land use history whose story may not have been widely shared.

Honoring Barbara Roberts
IMGL7992
On March 18th, at our 2017 McCall Gala, we recognized the Honorable Barbara K Roberts for her lifetime of service to Oregon. The Tom McCall Legacy Award is given to those who have demonstrated a deep commitment to Oregon and our land use planning system. Barbara Roberts exemplifies these qualities, with her lifetime of service, passion for creating equitable outcomes for Oregonians, and her hard work to preserve our state’s lands for future generations.
