Smart Policy Today, Strong Leaders Tomorrow

Today in Salem, the 77th Oregon Legislature convenes to consider a wide range of legislation that will undoubtedly affect the future of your community and the state we share.

As in every session, 1000 Friends will be active in Salem from the opening gavel to sine die. We'll be working with legislators to advocate for the most effective use of urban land, the highest consideration of farmland and the farming economy, and the best planning practices for our communities. Today, we describe our 2013 legislative priorities. We invite you to stay in touch all session long at friends.org/legislature.

But even as we work hard in Salem today, we're continuing to plant the seeds for strong Oregon leadership tomorrow. That's why we're excited to launch the second year of our Land Use Leadership Initiative. In this month's Oregon Stories, we introduce the 20 emerging leaders who make up our 2013 LULI cohort. Also, we review a recent report on Oregon's farming industry from the State Board of Agriculture. Among the core recommendations: don't turn back from Oregon's farmland protections.

Thanks for all you do for Oregon,

The team at 1000 Friends of Oregon

P.S. There is still time to get tickets to our 2013 Tom McCall Legacy Gala, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Oregon's land use planning program. Tickets here: friends.org/Gala2013.

Our 2013 Legislative Priorities

We are pleased to share our 2013 legislative priorities, organized around three principles: 1) Support jobs and housing through smart use of urban land, 2) Grow the agricultural economy by protecting farmland and farmers, and 3) Bring better facts and broader participation to planning.

Check out our 2013 Legislature page for more details on issues we'll be following this session. And stay tuned for frequent updates as bills are proposed or proceed through the Capitol chambers.

Board of Ag: Keep Farming Strong Through Strong Farmland Protection

What is the future of Oregon's second-largest industry? In its 2013 State of Oregon Agriculture report, released late last month, the State Board of Agriculture provides an "honest, unvarnished look" into the current opportunities and challenges facing Oregon farmers. There is a lot to cover on a variety of issues, but the Board is clear about the importance of strong land use protections for a thriving farming sector, producing crops like these Yamhill County hazelnuts.
